The Sanctuary Series
Sanctuary is a five-book saga and my love letter to long-form storytelling. As a Haitian native, the world-building of Riverwell was deeply inspired by my own perspective of Haiti and the Dominican Republic. When creating a fictional island nation fractured into two separate worlds separated by a border, that real-world geographical divide was my blueprint. The highly polarized political climate of the series, including intense fearmongering and anti-UTR campaigns, was heavily influenced by modern politics in both my homeland and the United States.
Across five books, the story shifts from an intimate romance into an ensemble-driven political thriller:
- Book 1: Sanctuary: The Governor's Daughter focuses on the unexpected romance between Hannah and Danny, establishing the massive class divide and giving readers a clear view of the elite political machinery in the capital.
- Book 2: Sanctuary: The Cost of Happiness shifts the story into a high-stakes survival thriller, exploring the devastating consequences of their rebellion as they are hunted across the border.
- Book 3: Sanctuary: The Secret dives into the complex drama of a maturing marriage. It tests their relationship behind closed doors while uncovering deeply harrowing backstories, specifically focusing on the tragic domestic trauma of Sophie Rivil.
- Book 4: Sanctuary: The Shadows of Afton steps away from the capital to explore systemic homophobia and misogyny. Following Kian and Mikael, it exposes the barbaric, archaic laws of the territories that punish people for loving who they love.
- Book 5: Sanctuary: Legacy brings the saga to its climax with explosive political warfare. It centers on the chaotic gubernatorial election between Julian Maximus and Samuel Grant, dissecting the clash of opposing political ideologies and weaponized media conspiracies.
The road to publishing this series was a profound learning experience. Early on, the manuscript faced rejections from traditional literary agents. Rather than compromising my vision to secure a traditional publishing deal, I chose to release the series independently through Shilderic, retaining full creative control so the story could evolve into the dark, unapologetic thriller it was meant to be.
