Mama Esha

Mama Esha is an elderly seer in Cora who operates out of a brightly painted, incense-filled tent at the village market. She has long, flowing white hair, but her most striking physical features are the heavy, jagged burn scars that map the left side of her face, twisting down her neck and disappearing beneath her collar, as well as covering the back of her hands and fingers.

When Hannah and Danny visit her tent, she reads their palms and predicts a bright but difficult future, foretelling a wedding that bridges their two worlds.

She prophesies that they will have two children, but warns that their family will be born of true devotion and a great sacrifice where a woman's life is given.

She also accurately predicts Danny's terrifying rise to absolute authority, stating he will command the shadows of the capital, powerful men will fear his name, and he will be the shield that decides the fate of Riverwell.

Danny dismisses her as a scammer and pulls Hannah away, a belief seemingly confirmed when he discovers his money is missing shortly after leaving her tent.

Years later, after Hannah is left infertile from poisoning and deeply depressed, Danny remembers Mama Esha's prophecy about them having two children.

Desperate for answers, Danny flies to Cora and tracks her down to a dark, unsettling cave in the mountains, where he finds her severely ill and dying.

It is here that the heartbreaking origin of her scars is revealed. Mama Esha explains that her family was slaughtered by a mob in Katari when she was a child because her father was accused of practicing mysticism and witchcraft. The mob beheaded her parents right in front of her and set their house on fire. She was trapped inside the burning home, screaming and watching her parents bleed, until two men finally pulled her out, leaving her with the severe, permanent burn scars. She reveals that she lived a life of isolation because people viewed her as a 'beast' and mocked her marks, but she never felt alone because the spirits of her family and ancestors were always with her.

Mama Esha insists she never lied to him, explaining that the prophecy clearly showed her two children, but that someone must have deliberately messed with their timeline.

Danny uses his intelligence resources to extract her via medical helicopter, but she tragically succumbs to her illness at the Riverwell emergency center.

Honoring her roots and lifelong resilience, Danny and Hannah arrange a completely private, traditional burial for her in the remote mountains of Cora, burying the seer whose words ultimately proved entirely true.
