Book 3
Sanctuary: The Shadows of Afton

Mikael Kabadu is a talented and gentle seventeen-year-old violinist who is pulled from his beloved band class by Coach Bruno and forced to serve as the equipment manager for the Afton High basketball team.

Working in the damp washhouse, Mikael endures relentless bullying and homophobia from the arrogant athletes, particularly from the team's star player, Kian Buholo.

The torment reaches a devastating peak when Kian violently shatters Mikael's cherished violin, a precious memento from his late father, and beats Mikael until he is left unconscious and bleeding on the stone floor.

Despite the horrific abuse, Mikael shows profound mercy by refusing to retaliate, which sparks a massive shift in Kian's behavior and prompts the athlete to sincerely apologize and protect him.

For Mikael's birthday, Kian surprises him with a breathtaking new crimson violin featuring a custom engraving of a quote from Mikael's late father, leading the two boys to share a tender, secret kiss.

They build a beautiful, hidden sanctuary away from Afton's lethal homophobic laws, falling deeply in love and planning to escape to Riverwell City together upon graduation.

Their fragile peace shatters when Kian's public girlfriend, Eve, discovers she is pregnant. The tension culminates when Eve catches them hiding together in a dark bedroom, drawing a mob of villagers who violently arrest the two boys.

Mikael is put on a terrifying public trial in the village square. Because he has just passed his eighteenth birthday, he is deemed legally responsible under the archaic Afton Code.

Despite his mother's desperate pleas for mercy, the sovereign council casts a deciding four-to-three vote against him, and Mikael is tragically executed by guillotine by the enforcer Paolo while Kian is forced to watch.

Book 4
Sanctuary: Legacy

Mikael's unjust and brutal death serves as a profound catalyst for change across the nation, exposing the horrific reality of Afton's archaic laws and sparking massive protests.

To honor his memory and ensure his beautiful melody is never forgotten, the wealthy Cardwell family funds the construction of a state-of-the-art stadium in the heart of Afton, officially naming it the Mikael Kabadu Arena.

During the historic inauguration in the capital, Danny Buholo pays tribute to Mikael's gentle and beautiful soul, acknowledging that his tragic execution opened the nation's eyes and forced them to tear down barbaric laws.
