Character summary

Book 3
Sanctuary: The Shadows of Afton

Paolo operates as Chief Omari's brutal enforcer and the court Interrogator in Afton, known as the boss of the guards and the man who operates the region's guillotine.

Before their public trial, he visits Kian and Mikael in their dark holding cells, maliciously taunting Kian by stating he will enjoy executing Mikael first so Kian is forced to watch.

When Kian spits in his face in a protective rage, Paolo violently slaps the teenager across the face.

Acting as the Interrogator during the public trial, Paolo paces the stone square with a heavy wooden baton, loudly declaring homosexuality an abomination and a menace to the future of Afton.

He viciously mocks Mikael, calling him Mikaella to make the hostile crowd laugh, and ruthlessly interrogates the boys' mothers, telling Enya she failed her son by not beating the sickness out of him.

When Mikael bravely questions Paolo's own parenting and character, Paolo flies into a feral rage and strikes the fragile boy across the upper back with his heavy wooden baton, collapsing him to the stone floor in agony.

After Councilman Victor uses a legal loophole to spare Kian, Paolo proudly announces Mikael's death sentence and callously rejects Enya's desperate pleas to buy her son's life, stating the laws of Afton cannot be bought.

The next morning, Paolo ignores Kian's agonizing cries and pulls the heavy release lever of the guillotine, brutally executing Mikael in front of the massive crowd.

Later that exact same night, Kian breaks into Paolo's home seeking vengeance and holds Paolo's pregnant wife at gunpoint to wake the sleeping Interrogator.

Although Paolo breaks down on his knees and begs for his life and his unborn child, Kian spares the wife but shoots Paolo directly in the neck, leaving the ruthless enforcer to die on his blood-soaked mattress.
