Victor Buholo

Kian and Danny's abusive father and an Afton Councilman whose strict enforcement of the region's archaic laws ultimately leads to his own demise.

Character summary

Book 1
Sanctuary: The Governor's Daughter

Victor is Danny and Kian's deeply abusive father. Years ago, when he discovered his wife sought comfort with another man, he beat her mercilessly and intended to have her executed for cheating, forcing her to flee to Cora with a young Danny.

Years later, when Danny and a pregnant Hannah seek refuge in Afton, they visit his house for dinner. Victor makes highly disrespectful comments toward Hannah and viciously insults Danny's mother and aunt.

This leads to an explosive confrontation where Danny launches himself across the dining table and punches Victor in the face, prompting Danny and Hannah to leave the house immediately.

Book 3
Sanctuary: The Shadows of Afton

Now serving as an Afton Councilman and sovereign judge, Victor ruthlessly enforces the territory's patriarchal and homophobic laws.

He physically abuses his daughters, treating his eldest daughter Lena like a maid and violently dragging her by the hair, which provokes Kian to fight him to protect his sister.

Victor later returns home unexpectedly and discovers Kian and Mikael asleep in the same bed. He violently slaps Mikael and engages in a brutal brawl with Kian before grabbing his long gun with the intent to shoot the young musician.

During the public trial for homosexuality, Victor uses a legal loophole regarding Kian's age to spare his son from the guillotine, planning instead to send him to a harsh disciplinary labor camp to strip him of his perceived weakness.

However, Victor cruelly casts the deciding fourth vote to execute the eighteen-year-old Mikael, sealing the gentle boy's tragic fate.

Driven by pure devastation and vengeance after Mikael's execution, Kian returns to the house and shoots Victor to death with his own long gun.
